The ALS Adventure Challenge was founded for a very personal reason. Five years ago, my mom, who was a healthy, active woman and passionate outdoor enthusiast, was diagnosed with ALS. The news was shocking. How could such a wonderful, loving person be diagnosed with such a horrible illness?
From day one, my mom decided to not let this illness get to her. She kept living her life as she always did, loving each day and living it to the fullest. Her attitude was contagious to all those around her.
At the time, my husband and I had just gotten into the sport of Adventure Racing although had it not been for a good friend “gently” pushing us into it, we would never have tired it. It looked so intimidating. But once we got involved, we loved the sport and loved the people who were involved.
We realized we had the opportunity introduce beginners into this fantastic sport, while at the same time raising funds and awareness for ALS. The inaugural ALS Adventure Challenge took place on August 16, 2004. This was an entirely innovative concept for a fundraising event and the first of its kind. Registration filled up fast as it has done every year since.
In five short years, this event has changed so many people’s lives- both participants and people suffering from ALS. In addition, we have donated over $565,000 for ALS research and local patient services. Everyone involved is so passionate about the event. From the directors and leaders to race day volunteers and participants, the energy is contagious!
Hope to see you out on the trails!
Sincerely,
Lisa Richardson
